Tinkering with deep fake technology

This is both amazing , and scary. Brian Lane was a ww2 raf pilot officer . This still photo was taken shortly before his death in 1942 . With deep fake technology it allows any still image to be animated with your chosen text converted to speech . I’ve tried to keep the text here neutral if little tongue and cheek as I’m Conscious this is an image of a highly regarded and respected hero of the raf in ww2 … the ethics of this technology is certainly a hot subject and I hope the checks and balances for this tech is tight enough to prevent serious misuse .

Royal Air Force fighter pilot. Born Harrogate, grew up in Pinner. From the picture source website: “Brian Lane flew with RAF 19 Sqn and achieved 7 kills during his career, having seen action over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain. On 13 December 1942, he was last seen giving chase to two FW 190s. He never returned from this mission and was listed as “Missing in Action”.

Mission Briefing Video test 02

so , spent a bit more time today having a tweak at the mission briefing videos and seeing what works. Adding mission specific flight plans here for a large multiplayer multi mission server isnt feasible so I’ve decided to keep the maps generic but add real images of the targets as the narrator mentions them to add some depth to the missions realism. Feel free to add comments here on on youtube of any feedback god or bad , the laptop im working on was smoking a bit due to the amount of effects at play here ( albeit subtle effects , making things look old does take a bit of effort 😉 cheers. Walsh.

Mission briefing Demo video 1

when virtual flying motivation is low ( as it is now ) I like to mess about with ideas I’ve had on the back burner for a while. This one is in the theme of a call of duty / medal of honor style briefing room in a Quonset hut – the briefing audio is by a text to speech app so it is a bit janky but very promising in my opinion – not sure if there is a demand from the community for nything like this but it was fun to do either way . cheers.

Letters from the front – 18.07.44 Convoy Escort NW Lehavre

Love this anti bomber / Shipping Convoy protection mission over on 4ya ww2 DCS multiplayer server , Slapbladder took the lead and we had a good charge at it … we returned after this mishap to finish them off , we both ended up in the drink that time too but only one bomber got through and the convoy proceeded to safety intact. Great stuff .

Local History – Langford Lodge , Northern ireland. Base Air Depot No. 3, United States Army Air Force Station 597

Walsh here , being Northern Irish and having an interest in the war years, I had no idea there would be so much facinating history of the period in my local vicinity .

Today my featured piece of local history is a reasonably local ( 20 miles away ) airfield that served an important function for allied bombers before heading off to the strategic bombing campaign in the ETO . Langford lodge . Finding out my grandfather was there as a civilian contractor was an added bonus.

Its always amazing finding out you have a connection to these major moments in history.

Please enjoy this excellent article from wartime NI.

Letter from the front 2

Nice / Honest comments from surf vr over on 4ya ww2 , although the impression that stats are broken is incorrect , they are beta and if there’s an issue the team are looking into it . Stats are very important to us and the implementation of the excellent jester script has been very solid so far , although it is a constantly developing piece of work by its creator , 4yas Lurcher . Great to hear the positives in surfs comments too as this is the point of the server – a place where we can communicate and work together with people from all around the globe with people we typically would not ordinarily meet , love this community and we hope this open and transparent way of dealing with our player base enriches the whole community .

I am hoping to do more bits like this of community input in the fashion of a diary entry as the pilots would have did during the war.

If you would like to submit an entry for conversion to this format please post over on 4ya ww2 discord page. Cheers , Walsh.

New website now active…
