Gore … or lack of gore … in ww2 combat simulators ….
I asked an interesting question over on ED forums , Hoggit and 4ya ww2 discord , whether dcs should have a stronger visual indicator that the pilot has taken some critical damage leading to a pilot kill.
The responses varied from positive , neutral to negative , with some responses indicating it would make them feel sick .
I’m curious why in flight sims users are a lot more squeamish than “grunt simulators” like day of infamy , COD ww2 , Postscriptum , Hell Let loose et al … some of the death effects in those are positively ptsd inducing … but why as a user base are we so averse to see the ultimate outcome of what we are trying to achieve…
I am also keen to have war , and the serious consequences that arise from partaking in war , correctly represented when ultimately it doesn’t go your way .
wise words from walsh lol

I modified the image above , a still taken from this excellent video https://youtu.be/xbEW3Bi1Gpo , the clear damaged canopy effect made me think this would only require some simple modification to that texture to implement this immediately to those cockpits that have glass damage modelled .
Now don’t get me wrong , I hate blood , specifically the sight of my own blood …especially when a doctors sucking it from a vain with a syringe ( I passed out as a kid when i looked at it drip into the test tube – the thick syrup like consistency completely blew my mind ) so I can see why this would be off putting for some , although I am also keen to have war , and the serious consequences that arise from partaking in war , correctly represented when ultimately it doesn’t go your way . I was once that impressionable kid that though war was like videogames … many years later and having watched from afar many poor young people have their lives blighted by war , I’m all for having the option to display it , and the circumstances the heros we try to emulate found themselves facing , represented here in our favourite air combat sim .
Cheers all , Walsh , Out.
